You might have tasted authentic Japanese food but trying out
the contemporary Japanese food can be fun too. After tasting success at their
pop-ups at the Olive Mumbai, Delhi’s Japanese food restaurant chain, Guppy by
Ai, is now having pop-ups at Olive Bistro for the next three months. So if you
want to experience contemporary Japanese food in a more relaxed and fun way,
then Guppy By Ali Pop Ups at the Olive Bistro is the place for you.
Chef Vikram Khatri |
The Guppy pop-up is helmed by Head Chef Vikram Khatri whose
menu comprises contemporary Japanese dishes, which represents the flavour and
techniques of Japanese cooking. While explaining the concept of the pop-ups, Chef
Vikram Khatri says, “Pop Up is a unique concept of advertising your product in
less cist. It also lets you test water in an alien set up before jumping in
with full a investment. They help you introduce new cuisine without
intimidating the patrons.”
Though there are other restaurants serving Japanese cuisine
in the city, Khatri says the USP of Guppy is exciting Japanese food presented
in a quirky, relaxed and non-intimidated set up. “It also breaks the myth of Japanese
food being the only seafood and no vegetarian options and being extremely
expensive.”
Guppy by Ali offers both indoor lounge and open-air section,
which are decorated with antique knick-knacks. The whole ambience is quite nice
and perfect to relax, unwind and enjoy the scrumptious food.
Refreshing : Sakura Martini |
Guppy By Ai offers quite a variety of special cocktails menu, especially
Sangria Sake (Rs 350) and Ninja bamboo Martini ( Rs 350) which is a vodka based
drink with mint and a bamboo leaf and Sakura Martini. This is a must try.
Edamame Salt |
Edamame Chilli garlic |
The gastronomic journey
starts with Edamame (Rs 160), a steamed or boiled tender soyabean served with two
seasonings namely salt and chilly garlic. Edamame were a big hit among diners
and many plates of Edamame were being savoured along with the drinks. The Prawn
Gyoza (Rs 390) stuffed with tiger prawns and lot of subtle flavours, was fresh
and very delicious. Vegetarians can opt for exotic Mushroom Gyoza, which is
glutton free, crisp bottom steamed pot sticks served with chilly ponzu soy dipping
sauce. Prawn Tempura and butterfried crispy Rock Corn Tempura both are crisp
and are good to go with the drinks. Chicken Karaage (Japanese version of soy
and sake marinated fried chicken served with spicykewpie sauce and chicken
Nanaban (chicken marinated and tossed in Japanese Worcestershire tonkatsu sauce.
Tiger Prawn Tempura |
Rock Corn Tempura |
Misa soup is fermented soy bean paste soup in kelpdashi with
tofu, wakame and seasonal vegetables and it is very healthy as well as tasty.
Signature Pork Belly |
Exotic Terppanyaki vegetables |
In the main course, the Pork Belly, a signature dish of
Guppy that is slow cooked and glazed with soy honey, served with mustard miso will
just melt in the mouth. Vegetarians can go for the Teriyaki Glazed Tofu and
Asparagus, which is soy glazed grilled asparagus and tofu served on a bed of
seasonal greens and Udaan noodles (Rs 500) or wok tossed exotic Teppanyaki
Vegetables (Rs 500) with an assortment of bamboo shoots, water chestnut, beans
served with garlic fried rice. Full of fresh exotic veggies, these dishes are
not only healthy but tasty too.
Vegetable Rolls |
Spicy Tuna Roll |
The Spicy tuna roll with the spicy mayo from the Sushi Bar
was pretty good, but we were little
disappointed as other sushi dishes such as Japanese vegetable roll didn’t taste
like the authentic Japanese Sushi. We convey our disappointment to Chef Vikram
Khatri when he joined the diners for a chit chat.
“Although we do keep our base very authentic, Guppy is a
contemporary Japanese restaurant and not an authentic one. However, if there is
someone who wants to try Tekka Maki or Oshinko Maki or Kappa Maki, we can
always dish that out,” Khatri says.
Warm Carrot Cake,Macroon Brownie,Insanity cake |
Those who have sweet tooth can round off the meal with the fluffy
carrot cakes which tastes just divine.
